Dealing with spam is a mounting problem. Not only is it frustrating to have to sort through email that you didn't want in the first place, but some of it can be down-right offensive. Knowing how to avoid spam is your best defense, because once you become a target it's next to impossible to get it to completely stop - forcing many people to abandon email address. The best way to avoid spam completely is to have good on-line habits in relation to your "Internet identity". Most important to this is how and where you use your email address(es).
As an example: If you do not want to receive spam at work, the most important thing you can do is to not use your work address for personal correspondence or for signing up for information on non work-related websites. Just as important as that, it can also be very helpful if you use a separate email address for family-related communications, separate from the address you use when signing up for miscellaneous things (such as on-line games, news agencies, craigslist, iwon, etc.) on-line.
Personal information abuse is at an all-time high right now, and companies (both reputable and not) will resell your information in order to make an extra buck. Once your information gets resold a couple of times from that initial sign-up (even on a reputable site), is when you will likely start to receive the truly regenerative spam. This is where email address separation from work, family/personal, and on-line identities can play a very important role in a healthy Internet persona as well as your own personal sanity.
* If you only use your work email address for formal work purposes, it should never get spam.
It may sound like a bit much to have more than one address, but if your are an active Internet user, this can significantly diminish the amount of spam that gets intermingled with mail that is important to you!
